Fortunately

How do the past, present, and future add up? What can we glean from yesterday to apply to tomorrow? And where can I learn to levitate a crystal ball?
I saw this sign and was reminded of my new favorite show, Carnivàle. I was also struck with our tendency, as humans, to want to know the answers to these questions. Whether or not we believe in any of the forms of divination or psychic intuition, there’s an unquenchable curiosity among most of us to know what the future holds–as long as the news is good and at a minimal charge. Many are temporarily satisfied with a witty fortune cookie or the message on the inside of a foil chocolate wrapper. But then there are those days when we need more, when we want to be assured somehow, someway, that change is in the air, and that good tidings are on their way. But isn’t that uncomfortable “not knowing” part of what life is about? What ever happened to appreciating the thrills of a surprise? Well, there’s always the Magic 8 Ball to tide you over.
