Happy Birthday, Mr. Lynch

January 20, 2007, David Lynch turns 61.
Today has been a good day for art on at least three accounts:
First, I heard a rumor that my favorite band, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, might be reforming to tour in America. Since I never got to see them in their heyday, this could be my chance.
Second, I finally went to see “Volver” by one of my favorite directors, Pedro Almodovar.
Third, while waiting for the film to start at the Clay, I popped into Browser Books. After looking around for quite awhile, it wasn’t until almost leaving that I spotted a new book by David Lynch near the cash register. I did a double-take, since not only is Lynch my favorite director, but I’ve always wanted to learn more about his thoughts on the creative process (rather than scholarly interpretations of his films). The book Lynch on Lynch was great, but it’s now several years old and he’s done a lot since then. But here was a book written in his own words about meditation and consciousness and creativity! This is the kind of thing I live for! Still buzzing from this find and wondering how I didn’t know about the book’s release late last year, one of the previews at the movie theatre was for Lynch’s new film, INLAND EMPIRE staring Laura Dern and Jeremy Irons. Wow! You’d think I’d be on some kind of email list to tell me about these things far in advance, but I seem to still be out of the loop in most cases. Regardless, I live in San Francisco, filled with great art theatres and independent book stores that display copies of cool stuff by the register. Wowzers. Oh, and today is David Lynch’s birthday. Is there some kind of synchronistic event going on? Does that make him an Aquarius? Even if the timing made his sun slip into Capricorn rather than under the airy sign of the water-carrier, I think most would agree that he’s got to have a good chunk of Aquarian energy going on. Well, happy birthday, wherever you are, and three cheers for great art and curious discoveries.
